Spend the day with the humanitarian de-mining organisation APOPO and learn more about their work in the numerous minefields of Cambodia’s Northeast. Begin the day early at the visitors centre in Siem Reap where you will receive an introduction to the operations and learn about the minefields from a trained professional. Here you will receive a short demonstration of the famous Herorats at work. Most recently a rat named Magawa received the PDSA Gold Medal, for its work in Cambodia.
After the visit, we head out to the minefield, this will be either by car of helicopter depending on the location of the minefield and budget. Once at the minefield you will be fitted with protective gear. Have a talk with the operatives and witness the Herorats at work. When the time is right a mine that has been recently discovered will be detonated right in front of your eyes, the explosion will most likely come as a shock, but the memory will live on forever.
This day will involve a reasonable donation to the APOPO organisation but you will be safe in the knowledge that the funds will help many rural villagers live safely in their communities for years to come.
