Ratanakiri is the final frontier and the ‘wild east’ Cambodia with the province bordering both Vietnam and Laos. The town of Banlung is still very rustic as it was difficult to access for so many years. Now the infrastructure is much improved and developments are evident throughout the sleepy market town.

The real reason to come here to visit however is not the town itself but the hidden gems scattered throughout the province. Ratanakiri still has plenty of undiscovered corners with outstanding natural beauty from thundering waterfalls to rugged jungle where you can trek for days without seeing another person to stunning river boat trips along unspoiled waterways.

This was once the area of the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail and remnants of these trails are still accessible to this day. This is one of the few areas where an abundance of megafauna can still be seen if you are very lucky. The region is also known for its traditional gem mines which once yielded an abundance of precious stones.

A visit to one of the numerous indigenous ethnic groups still living in close knit communities in the area is like stepping back in time and witnessing history, you’ll most likely come across some of the following communities Brao Kachac, Kreung, Bunong and Tampuan groups,however there are over12 groups living in the hills of the region. As a primary reason to visit is trekking, it is certainly worth slowing down and taking a few days to fully appreciate all that this once remote destination has to offer.
